Product Details

A beautifully decorated and handmade “Shepherds Crooks” armchair from England, mid 19th century.

The Cartouche-shaped back veneered in figured burr walnut, the silk needlework upholstery (from a later period) in a flower design and silk on the armrest give this chair a very rich look.

The firm chair is in good condition, only the upholstery from the seat has on the side a few cracks. Because this hand-stitched embroidered fabric with a flower design is so beautiful and usable, I left it that way.

The history of this chair is extensively described in various books. This chair is a copy of a familiar design of an 18th century dressing chair. It is attributed to Gillows & Co. as well.

A drawing in the Estimate Sketch Book for 13 June 1827 shows an almost identical chair described as 'Old English', made for Dallam Tower near Milnthorpe, Lancashire.
